SUMMARY: This year’s Staff Recognition Award winner in the College of Arts and Letters is Peggy Smith, who serves as the Program Support Technician in the Department of History.

Each year, the College of Arts and Letters honors one exceptional staff member with the Staff Recognition Award. To be considered for this award, the staff member must be nominated by faculty or fellow staff. The nomination letters are then reviewed by the Staff Recognition Award subcommittee and the top candidates are interviewed. Since the College of Arts and Letters has so many talented staff members, the task of choosing a winner is quite difficult. The college extends special thanks to Laura Stewart, Lori Patton and Sandra Purington for serving on the subcommittee this year.

The CAL Staff Recognition Award winner for 2020 is Peggy Smith, who is described as a “genuine team player” with “outstanding commitment and character.”

Peggy has served as the Program Support Technician in the Department of History since December of 2012. She is best described by the following excerpt from her nomination letter:

She works tirelessly in her duties for the department, and her contributions are extraordinary not for their showiness or occasional nature, but rather because they are the substance of her approach and accomplishments on the department’s behalf every day. She would suggest that she was ‘just doing her job’ but, in fact, she is doing far more in support of faculty, students, and staff in this unit and beyond.

Congratulations to Peggy Smith for being selected as the winner of the 2020 Staff Recognition Award. She is a vital member of her department, the College of Arts and Letters and James Madison University.
