Bio Alumni Aid in Public Health Efforts

News

SUMMARY: Recent Biology alumni are providing valuable service as bioinformaticians and genomic epidemiologists at the Virginia public health laboratory and the CDC.

Kevin Libuit and Rachael St. Jacques, both recent graduates (M.S. and B.S.) in Biology, are filling critical roles as scientists tracking the genomic epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in Virginia and the east coast. Both are bioinformaticians at the Virginia Department of Consolidated Laboratory Services (the VA public health lab) who are comparing the whole genome sequences of SARS-CoV-2 isolated in Virginia, using mutational changes to track its spread across the area.
