10-january-harry-dunn-inset.jpgWhen rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C., “We, my coworkers and I, we were just fighting for each other,” said Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn (’05). “Not one member of Congress or their staffs were hurt.” The health sciences major honed his instinct to protect and defend while an offensive lineman at JMU: “In that moment, it was about fighting for the person next to you, which I learned in sports; You do things for the guy next to you.” Like his emotional testimony before Congress, Dunn’s time at JMU is a picture of perseverance. Though his freshman football season ended a disappointing 2–10, the Dukes battled back to win the national championship his senior year. “The person that I am, how I deal with adversity, I learned that through athletics here at JMU,” he said. “I believe I am a defender of democracy, and I’m going to keep fighting for that.”
