Former rector of the JMU Board of Visitors James Hartman (’70, ’00P) describes his family’s financial support of the new College of Business Learning Complex as “a giveback situation.” His ties to the university began when it was known as Madison College, and he regards his undergraduate business education with great appreciation: “I look back at those years as being really important, critical to our success in our family business, because it gave me a foundation. I learned from really excellent profs.” His family’s substantial gift is recognized by the new building name, Hartman Hall, and when he and his wife, Carolyn (’00P),toured the facilities, they marveled at the architecture, the bright and expansive interior and the industrious students. “It’s a total ‘wow!’ when you walk into the building,” Carolyn exclaimed. A grand opening is planned to celebrate the completed complex, which will include a renovated Showker Hall, in fall 2021.
