Alum's Experience at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art

News

Bethany Old, Class of 2014 and an Art History major, is reporting in from the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach where she has been newly appointed as a Gallery Teacher and Art Teacher, offering tours of the collections, followed by children’s hands-on art experiences. Bethany is seen beneath Dale Chihuly’s “Mille Colori” (2003), with Frank Gehry’s new colorful twist cube seating below; also pictured is last Friday’s art studio class. For her larger project at MOCA Bethany is busy researching the art lab to accompany the Spring 2015 Ryan McGinness exhibition at MOCA, including text, images, and videos highlighting the artist’s work and career. McGinness is one of Bethany’s favorite new contemporary artists, and one whose work she saw with Laura Katzman’s JMU class visit to the VMFA in Richmond in Spring 2014. Bethany is also excited about her work on the new MOCA education program for visually-impaired museum visitors to debut in October 2014, that will include tactile prints and the offering of “touch tours.”
