James Madison University honored 405 employees for their years of service during its annual Faculty Service Awards on Oct. 7 and the Staff and Administrative and Professional Faculty Service Awards on Oct. 8 in the Festival Grand Ballroom. The two-day program recognized faculty, staff, and administrative and professional faculty for their dedication and contributions to the university.
In his remarks to faculty, President Jim Schmidt said, “The work you do matters far beyond the classroom. It shows up in our exceptional graduates, in collaborations that connect JMU to our community and the world, research that breaks new ground, and in the culture of care and excellence that defines this place.”
And to staff, Schmidt said, “You are the heartbeat of James Madison University. The work you do often happens behind the scenes, but its impact is seen and felt in every corner of our campus and community. Your efforts create the JMU experience.”
The ceremonies marked the 53rd year the university has recognized faculty and staff milestones, which are celebrated in five-year increments beginning with five years of service at JMU.
Among those honored were three employees who reached 40 years of service: Donna Amenta, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry; Alexander Gabbin, a professor of accounting; and Kevin Stees, a professor of music. Four additional employees were recognized for 35 years of service: Hugh Brown III in student affairs, Oris Griffin in the College of Education, Sharon Lovell, dean of the College of Health and Behavioral Studies, and Fasha Strange in academic affairs.
The university also celebrated 13 employees with 30 years of service, 48 with 25 years, and 69 with 20 years.
