Jim Schmidt begins tenure as JMU president, sets vision for the future

SUMMARY: A key focus of President Schmidt’s early days at JMU is relationship-building, both within the university and with external partners.

Jim Schmidt has officially started his new role as the seventh president of James Madison University, marking a new chapter in the institution’s leadership.

Schmidt succeeds Charlie King, whose tenure concluded on June 30 after being appointed as interim president from 2024-2025.

Schmidt was announced as JMU’s next president in March, following a national search. He brings over a decade of leadership experience from his previous role as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, where he served since 2013.

Since arriving on campus, Schmidt has wasted no time getting to know several campus communities, including employees, donors, members of the Faculty Senate, Board of Visitors and Student Government Association members, and local legislators.

A key focus of Schmidt’s early days at JMU is relationship-building, both within the university and with external partners. He is also beginning to shape his strategic priorities, which will be integrated into JMU’s upcoming strategic plan.

“This is an exciting time to be at James Madison University, and now it’s time to take our beloved university to a new level,” said Schmidt. “That next level will come from identifying and building on the distinctive strengths of JMU as we continue to celebrate the innovative work of our distinguished faculty, dedicated staff and our amazing students,” Schmidt added.
