Scientific Society Names Dilts a Fellow

College of Science and Mathematics

Dr. Judith A. Dilts, associate dean of the College of Science and Mathematics and professor of biology, joins a select group of scientists as one of the 2012 Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dilts is only the fourth JMU faculty member so honored by the world's largest scientific society and publisher of Science. Dilts joins the company of Dean David F. Brakke, Dr. Grace A. Wyngaard and Dr. Ivor Knight as AAAS Fellows.

Dilts will receive formal recognition of her leadership in science education and her mentorship of a generation of science, technology, engineering and mathematics leaders Feb. 18 during the AAAS Annual Meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia. One of 539 AAAS members elected as Fellows by the AAAS Council, Dilts is a member of the Section on Education.

Dilts was one of a small group of faculty members chosen to create an organization, which came to be known as Project Kaleidoscope, to improve undergraduate mathematics and science education in the United States. She began a Summer Leadership Institute for the organization that has trained a generation of leaders in STEM disciplines. Most recently she served as a co-principal investigator for a PKAL/Association of American Colleges and Universities grant on interdisciplinary learning from the National Science Foundation.
