Forbes Center in Architectural Spotlight

The Forbes Center for the Performing Arts at James Madison University has earned a 2011 Merit Award from the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. The award is one of four presented nationally.
Sponsored by the USITT Architecture Commission, the Architecture Awards Program honors excellence in the design of theater projects. Created in 1994, Merit awards are evaluated by a panel of distinguished jurors and evaluated for creative image, contextual resonance, community contribution, explorations in new technologies and functional operations.
The Forbes Center will be included in a display of 2011 award winners at the USITT Annual Conference and Stage Expo in March in Charlotte, N.C. Photos by JMU theater and dance faculty member, Richard Finkelstein, helped to express the reality and potential of the center.
The Forbes Center was designed by architects Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company, and opened to the public on June 15, 2010. The center is the premier destination for the arts in the Shenandoah Valley.
The Forbes Center for the Performing Arts is comprised of the Dorothy Thomasson Estes Center for Theatre and Dance and the Shirley Hanson Roberts Center for Music Performance and houses five state-of-the-art performance venues: the Mainstage Theatre (450 seats), the Concert Hall (600 seats), the Recital Hall (196 seats), the Studio Theatre (200 seats) and the Earlynn J. Miller Dance Theatre (200 seats). It also includes classroom, rehearsal and office facilities.
