Board of Visitors Meeting Summary, Jan. 7, 2011
NewsThe James Madison University Board of Visitors met Friday, January 7, 2011, in the Board Room of Madison's Festival Conference and Student Center.
Following is a summary of actions taken by the board and key areas of discussion at the board meeting:

Approved the October 1, 2010 Board meeting minutes;

Received the Presidents report presented by Dr. Linwood Rose;

Received and approved committee reports from Audit, Development, Education & Student Life, and Finance & Physical Development. The Athletic Committee did not meet;

Received a presentation from Dr. George Sparks, Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, on the Forbes Centers Grand Opening plans;
-
Received a presentation from Dr. Barry Falk, Director of the Honors Program;
-
Received a presentation from Donna Harper, Executive Assistant to the President, on the universitys crisis management plan;
-
Approved the Summer 2011 tuition and fees;
-
Received a presentation on the Governor's 2011-2012 budget, presented by Mr. Charles King, Sr. Vice President for Administration and Finance;

Approved the 2011-2012 budget amendments;
-
Received an update from Rector Jim Hartman and Search Committee Chairman Joe Damico on the presidential search;
-
Approved the policy changes regarding advanced placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) credits proposed by the Education and Student Life Committee;
-
Approved changes to the military reinstatement policy submitted by the Education and Student Life Committee;
-
Approved the universitys investment policy submitted by the Finance and Physical Development Committee.
Was told by President Linwood H. Rose:

that the Center for Multicultural Student Services celebrated their 25th anniversary;
-
that the B.S. Degree in Sport and Recreation Management was approved by SCHEV;
-
that JMU earned the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation;
-
that Governor McDonnell's budget calls for a net improvement of $50 million in higher education funding but also with substantial changes in retirement contributions for employees;
-
that JMU announced the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) initiative;
-
that the Governor's Commission on Higher Education released their report on December 3, 2010;
-
that President Rose announced on December 8, 2010 that he would step down in June 2012;
-
that Bill Jasien was the December Commencement speaker and there were 800 graduates;
-
that the cross country team was ECAC and CAA champions and coach Dave Rinker was named CAA Coach of the Year;
-
that Women's Soccer won the CAA Championship.
