JMU Recognized as a Community-Engaged University

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has acknowledged James Madison University's community engagement efforts by approving the university to receive its Community Engagement Classification for 2010.
The honor recognizes "the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities ... for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity."
"It is heartening to see this level of commitment and activity," said Carnegie President Anthony Bryk in a written statement. "Clearly, higher education is making real strides in finding ways to engage with and contribute to important community agendas.
"In addition to the honor, Dr. James Shaeffer, associate vice provost for outreach and engagement at JMU, expects the application process to have a long-term effect on the university's efforts to document its community engagement activities.
"We fully expect that the process and data gathering that was required for completing the application will serve as a template for enhancing JMU's campuswide community engagement activities, as well as annually documenting these efforts," Shaeffer said.
JMU joins 114 other institutions across the country in securing the prestigious classification, along with 196 others recognized in the 2006 and 2008 selection processes.
