Let's Chat About ChatGPT:

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT have dominated higher ed news recently. Many faculty are concerned about the impact that student use of such tools may have on their teaching, especially with respect to academic honesty and grading. Other faculty explore ways in which they can use AI for teaching activities, while others are curious about ways in which AI can be used to complete routine faculty tasks. There's a deluge of blog posts, articles, tweets, and Facebook posts that have explored these and related questions; a forthcoming CFI Teaching Toolbox will try to hew a path through these voices and summarize some suggestions.   

Following up on the Teaching Toolbox, this online roundtable invites faculty to a facilitated conversation about the promises and pitfalls of this new technology. The conversation will consider the threats and opportunities of AI in higher education as well as faculty support needs around this topic.

Facilitators:

Faculty participants will make progress toward the following program outcome:

  • Identifying factors that influence pedagogical choices
  • Identifying promises and pitfalls of artificial intelligence in teaching and other areas of our work. 
  • Determining their support needs as they navigate the use of AI. 

CFI programs will be canceled automatically if JMU is closed for inclement weather.
