What We Do
CARE volunteers may serve as an active support for survivors by guiding them through the process of pressing charges and accompanying them to court. Outside of support services, CARE gives presentations to other organizations on campus about sexual assault and encourages both men and women to use CARE as a resource.
It is not necessary to be trained in order to be a member of CARE or to be an advocate against sexual assault. Those who have not been trained are still an integral part of CARE. Aside from the helpline, CARE provides educational programs to individual organizations and residence halls, and presents campus-wide programs, such as RAPE IS NOT SEX. All CARE members are also involved in informing the JMU community about our services and in fundraising activities.
Training
2008 Fall Schedule:
Saturday, October 11
Sunday, October 12
Saturday, October 18
Sunday, October 19
Training sessions are mandatory. You must attend all training dates. If you cannot attend all training days for the full duration, your application will be filed for next semester's training. Training will be held on campus. You will be notified with further information.
We welcome your interest in the program, but also wish to caution you that this training program is demanding of both time and personal investment and not all who apply will train, and not all who train will immediately begin as helpline operators. A high level of commitment is also necessary after training to ensure the quality of CARE's services.
CARE APPLICATION
This application is for those interested in enrolling in the training and screening program for CARE peer volunteers. The responsibilities of trained members in the CARE helpline program will include answering calls from our 24 hour, 7 days a week answering system. These calls will address issues of sexual assault, responding with other health care professionals to sexual assault situations, and serving on an organizational committee. Training will involve a total of 30 plus hours and will cover a variety of information and skills deemed essential to your being an effective helpline volunteer and trained member.
Please return this application to the CARE office in TDU by 5pm by
Monday, October 6, 2008
When returning your application, sign up for an interview with a CARE Core Executive member. Interviews are held in the CARE office. You will be notified of your application status. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN CARE.
