Undergraduate Research at JMU
"Our desired outcome for all students is that they are educated and enlightened citizens prepared to be productive citizens and leaders in an ever changing world. This requires having the ability to integrate and apply the knowledge, skills and dispositions developed through engagement in learning experiences. This process is best learned and demonstrated in undergraduate research experiences. These experiences provide students opportunities to apply and refine their content knowledge; their skills of critical thinking, problem solving, communication and teaming; and their dispositions of inquisitiveness, creativity and innovation to questions of today and eventually to the questions of tomorrow that haven't even been conceived. That is why undergraduate research and performance are so important at JMU."

Undergraduate Research Rooted In Applied Learning Approach
The practice of undergraduate research at JMU has been an evolutionary process that can be traced to the university's beginning as a teaching school, according to the late Dr. John B. Noftsinger, Jr., who served as JMU's Vice Provost for Research and Public Service. "I think research and applied programs really mirror the development of the institution as a whole," Noftsinger once said, noting that "undergraduate researchers today apply in the field what they learn in the classroom much the way the university's first student teachers did when they performed student teaching."
