Mandatory Training for Persons Planning to Conduct Research Involving Human Subjects

Federal guidelines mandate that all investigators and key personnel who are directly responsible for the design and conduct of the human subject's part of the project be properly trained prior to working with human subjects. This requirement is in accordance with our Federal Wide Assurance filed with U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Human Research Protection.

To be compliant with this federal mandate, training, under the purview of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) JMU will be moving to the Collaborative Intuitional Training Initiative (CITI) curriculum for all Human Subjects Research in January 2010.   

Educational Materials - The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) has developed a course on  Human Subjects in Research that is available on-line.  The course covers the core Human Research instructional areas  to include the Belmont Report, history and ethical principles, defining research, informed consent form, students in research, international research, conflicts of interest, regulations, privacy, confidentiality, prisoners, children, research in public schools and more.   Follow the instructions below to register for the Human Subjects in Research course:

 Step 1: Go to  https://www.citiprogram.org/  and click "Register Here"

Step 2: Select James Madison University for the participating institution from the drop down list

 Step 3: Enter your user information.

Step 4: CITI Course Enrollment Procedure

Step 5: CITI Enrollment Questions

Step 6: Main Menu

Step 7: From the Main Menu, select “Enter”under Status.  If your screen does not show the modules listed below, you are not in the correct test!
