Sometimes the first lesson a teacher must teach is the ability to dream. Pat Watral ('12) knows this well. Working with Teach for America in rural Mississippi, he inspires students whose personal circumstances can make dreaming impossible. His fifth-graders, ranging in age from 10 to 13, "aren't really kids." he says. "They've raised themselves." The Delta, once the epicenter of the slave trade, is a place where poverty and history converge, where the attrition rate for teachers is 50 percent and where a qualified work force is absent. Pat's commitment to his students is to help them dream, learn and to change their lives.
