Former Breeze news editor Jeff Gammage ('82) looked into the face of violence as part of a team of journalists examining Philadelphia schools. The yearlong investigation became a seven-part series, "Assault on Learning," that exposed a school system where violence was the norm—and began to change it. "So much happened after that series came out. Everybody in the Philadelphia schools focused on safety," he says. "Concrete changes were made, not only safety measures but also the culture and the mindset." As a result, The Philadelphia Inquirer earned the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for public service, based on the work of Gammage and his fellow reporters.
