The School of Strategic Leadership Studies at JMU, in conjunction with United Way of Harrisonburg Rockingham County and The Community Foundation are pleased to sponsor an important day-long event for nonprofits executives, senior staff, board members, and interested donors in Virginia.  Our keynote speaker is Ms. Bunkie Righter from GuideStar USA who will be speaking on “The Ratings Game”.  She will take the audience through the evolution of GuideStar and talk about the problem GuideStar was trying to solve at the beginning and the problem they try to solve today with respect to nonprofits. Then she will talk about the distinction of being mistaken for an organization that rates charities and why GuideStar actually doesn’t. She and the audience will then discuss the ups and downs of ratings, great when they are good, terrible when their bad-and finally, she will be sure and leave time for a lively Q and A session.

We also have a number of other nationally known speakers in the area of nonprofits including Maria Markham from LaPiana consulting who will be leading a discussion on strategic management of nonprofits.  At lunch a panel discussion, facilitated by Revlan Hill, Director of Development and Community Relations, The Community Foundation Harrisonburg Rockingham and  Betsy Hay, Executive Director, United Way of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, will include local organizations who give generously to nonprofits in a session called, ”Inside the Donor’s and Funder’s Mind”, including:

  • Rachel Jackson, Senior Administrative Assistant, MillerCoors; serves on the MillerCoors Corporate Volunteer Council and MillerCoors United Way Campaign Site Lead Team
  • Neal Meneffee, President, Rockingham Group
  • Richard Baugh, Mayor, City of Harrisonburg
  • James McHone and Wayne Harrison, Darrin-McHone Charitable Foundation
  • Beverly McGowan, Philanthropist
  • Daniel Uribe, Vice President and Financial Advisor, Good Wealth Management

The afternoon will offer attendees a choice to join one of three interactive breakout sessions: 1. Social Media, 2. Managing Volunteers, and 3. Exploring Collaboration for Nonprofits.  At the end of the day, we will host a reception for attendees and speakers.
