LACS Statement on DACA

News

We, the members of the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Committee, wish to express our support for James Madison University students, faculty, staff, and community members affected by the Attorney General’s announcement this morning of the plan to wind down the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. In a November 2016 letter to the recently elected President Trump, over 645 university presidents, including President Alger, co-signed their belief that DACA recipients, “who have been raised and educated in the United States, are already part of our national community. They represent what is best about America, and as scholars and leaders they are essential to the future.” Our community is strengthened by the DACA students on campus, and we are resolute in our belief that you belong here. We at JMU strive to be an inclusive community that values the richness of all individuals and perspectives, and this will continue be true in the coming days and months.
