Sara Jo Malinske ('13) believes in opportunity and that's what she wants for girls in Kenya, where prospects are limited yet talent abounds. As a new JMU graduate, Sara Jo interned with Daraja, a boarding school in Kenya, conducting a media outreach for the school. The girls "all have stories that will break your heart, but in the end they are just teenage girls with enormous potential," she says. The sociology graduate believes that achieving gender equality for girls like those of Daraja is possible, but social change takes time. Showing others what's possible for girls to achieve is a good, solid step.
