Involvement in change processes has always been at the center of Sandy Dutemple’s life as a veteran middle-school science teacher. She understands that students are more than vessels for knowledge, but people changing. While a Madison student herself, Sandy learned from professors who “were more than knowledge dispensers, but who also modeled and shared their philosophies, standards and ethics,” she says. She emulated them throughout her career and most recently through Schools to Watch, an initiative identifying high-performing middle schools in Virginia and 18 other states. Sandy’s commitment to education led her to establish a planned gift honoring two influential professors, the late Lee Morrison and Pat Bruce.
