When fall
semester 2012 officially begins with the start of classes on Monday, Aug. 27,
the James Madison University student body will include 4,330 first-time
freshmen, according to preliminary data.
Although
official enrollment figures are not available until after census days on Sept.
17 (on-campus enrollment) and Oct. 8 (off-campus enrollment), JMU is poised to
welcome a total enrollment of slightly more than 20,000 students. Recent
reports show an enrollment of 20,032.
A total of 657 transfer
students are beginning their JMU experience this fall.
Biology remains
the most frequent major among freshmen declaring majors, followed by nursing,
health sciences, psychology and interdisciplinary liberal studies.
The most popular
first name among female students entering JMU as first-time freshmen is Emily.
The most popular name among males is Michael, followed closely by Matthew.
Approximately
124 new faculty members are joining the JMU community this fall.
Important dates:
Aug. 21 and 22: Residence halls open at 9 a.m. for first
year students on assigned days.
Aug. 24: First Year Student Assessment Day. All
first-year students are required to participate. Details about the day are
available on the Center for Assessment & Research
Studies website.
Aug. 24: Residence halls open at 9 a.m. for
transfer and international students.
Aug. 25: Residence halls open at 9 a.m. for
returning students.
Aug. 27: Fall semester begins. Classes meet as
scheduled.
Sept. 3: Labor Day. Classes meet as scheduled.
