Bryson (Professor, Social Work) received $185,734 from the Virginia Department of Education for the WHS 21st Century Community Learning Center to improve academic achievement and college readiness of Waynesboro High School students by focusing on environmental education that supports in-school content. 08
2011 August Grant Foucar-Szocki Dr. Diane L. Foucar-Szocki (Head, Learning, Technology and Leadership Education; Professor, Adult Education) received $200,000 from the Virginia Department of Education for the Thomas Harrison Community Learning Center to implement new efforts targeting English (reading/writing) with the intention of removing the school from English and School Improvement status and strengthening the community learning center efforts for enduring sustainability. 08
2011 August Grant Geier Dr. Clarence R. Geier (Professor, Anthropology) received $16,000 from Carmeuse Lime & Stone for "Merritt's Cavalry Camp Extended Phase I" to assess the remaining, currently forested, parcels of land of the Middle Marsh Tract west of Middletown, Virginia, Nieswander's Farm and Wesley Merritt's Cavalry Camp. 08
2011 August Grant Harris Dr. Reid N. Harris (Professor, Biology) received $526,505 from the National Science Foundation for "Dimensions: Collaborative Research: Diversity and symbiosis: examining the taxonomic, genetic, and functional diversity of amphibian skin microbiota." 08
2011 August Grant Heydari Tjaden Dr. M. Hossain Heydari (Professor, Computer Science) and Dr. Brett C. Tjaden (Associate Professor, Computer Science) received $34,807 from the Department of Defense for the DOD Information Assurance Scholarship Program in fiscal year 2012 to provide support for an undergraduate student for the Information Security Programs at JMU. 08
2011 August Grant Hubbell Jane Hubbell (Associate Director, Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services) received $10,000 from the City of Harrisonburg for the Medical Suitcases Clinic for the Homeless to provide onsite urgent care to clients enrolled in local homeless shelters while providing case management services when comprehensive services are needed. 08
2011 August Grant Jenkins Chelsea L. Jenkins (Executive Director, Virginia Clean Cities) received $5,000 from the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy for the "Update to the Virginia Energy Plan" to assist DMME with updates to the Virginia Energy Plan. 08
2011 August Grant Krech Joyce H. Krech (Director, Small Business Development Center) received $5,000 from Augusta County and $1,250 from the city of Lexington to support the Central Region Small Business Development Center. 08
2011 August Grant Lamb Susan F. Lamb (Business Manager, WMRA-FM) received $86,011 from the Virginia Public Broadcasting Board to develop, acquire, produce or deliver programs and services that support preschool and adult education and to inform, educate and entertain families with program contents that deliver alternatives to commercialized television and $34,937 from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in the form of community service grants. 08
2011 August Grant Linn Dr. Reid J. Linn (Dean, The Graduate School; Professor, Exceptional Education) received $7,000 from the National Science Foundation for "Collaborative: The Virginia Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate" to conduct a statewide survey of students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs to assess the state-specific reasons why they succeed (or not) in STEM disciplines. 08
2011 August Grant Ludlow Dr. Christy L. Ludlow (Professor, Communication Studies and Disorders) received $60,385 from the Alfred Mann Foundation for "Usage of Peak Motus software to analyze Videofluoroscopic recordings of Modified Barium Swallow for Hyolaryngeal elevation measurements" and $16,193 from Passy-Muir Inc. for "Psychophysical Study of Effects of Different Device Parameters on Swallowing Frequency and Brain Responses" to identify which stimulation parameters will induce a greater increase in swallowing rate and the greatest cortical brain response to vibrotactile stimulation in healthy volunteers. 08
2011 August Grant Maslen Dr. Eric H. Maslen (Director and Professor, Integrated Science and Technology) received $2,962 from HDT Expeditionary Systems Inc. to analyze data from HDT's summer shelter tests, write a summary report and present the findings. 08
2011 August Grant McKown Raab Dr. Robert L. McKown (Professor, Integrated Science and Technology) and Dr. Ronald W. Raab (Professor, Integrated Science and Technology) received $51,180 from the National Institutes of Health for "Structure and Function of Ocular Lacritin, Year 4" to continue work on the development of syndecan-1 deletion and point mutants to further elucidate the nature of the lacritin cell surface binding complex. 08
2011 August Grant Nagel Ogundipe Dr. Robert L. Nagel (Professor, Engineering) and Dr. Adebayo A. Ogundipe (Assistant Professor, Engineering) received $15,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for "Research into the Design and Development of a Campus Composting Facility" to provide JMU with sustainable means of recycling food waste from the dining halls by designing an aerobic composting facility on campus. 08
2011 August Grant Nash Dr. Carole L. Nash (Instructor, Geography) received $2,725 from the city of Harrisonburg for "Archaeological Investigations Associated with the Construction of Shelter #2 and Amphitheater Band Shell, Ralph Sampson Park" to assess the impact of construction on historic landscape within the boundaries of the park. Nash received $22,342 from the National Park Service to conduct archaeological field surveys as required and conduct condition assessments on sites already listed in the Archaeological Site Management Information System and update the records in that system, and $4,870 from the National Park Service to conduct condition assessments on known sites listed in the Archaeological Site Management Information System to determine the impacts to these sites from the Smith Run fire of February 2011. 08
2011 August Grant Pierrakos Dr. Olga Pierrakos (Assistant Professor, Engineering) received $34,000 from the National Science Foundation for "BRIGE: Understanding Engineering Students through the Lens of Identity Theory — Implications for Recruitment and Retention of Underrepresented Students" to continue data collection and analysis, as well as furthering the development of valid and reliable instruments to measure the engineer identity of students. 08
2011 August Grant Rankin Dr. Mark C. Rankin (Assistant Professor, English) received $179,392 from the National Endowment for the Humanities for "Tudor Books and Readers: 1485-1603" to investigate the physical construction of books and the nature of reading during the era of the Tudor monarchs through an overseas program. 08
2011 August Grant Rutherford Dr. Kenneth R. Rutherford (Director, Center for International Stabilization and Recovery) received $496,672 from the U.S. Department of State for "CISR Core Services to WRA" to maintain and enhance the existing Mine Action Information Center website information and tools, and to maintain and annually update the Online Global Mine Action Registry and $39,126 from the National Committee for Demining and Rehabilitation for "Support to the Jordan Explosive Remnants of War Training Course 2010." 08
2011 August Grant Swayne Klevickis Sochacki Giovanetti Niculescu Nick D. Swayne (Coordinator for External Relations, College of Education), Dr. Cynthia A. Klevickis (Professor, Integrated Science and Technology), Dr. James S. Sochacki (Professor, Mathematics and Statistics), Dr. Kevin L. Giovanetti (Professor, Physics and Astronomy) and Dr. Gabriel Niculescu (Associate Professor, Physics and Astronomy) received $199,991 from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia for the Virginia Initiative for Robotics in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education to improve teacher quality in science, technology and math content knowledge and pedagogical skills with innovative, sustainable, engaging, research-based teaching methods, and to address the needs of middle- and high-school teachers and principals. 08
2011 August Presentation Baker Dr. George H. Baker III (Professor, Integrated Science and Technology; Technical Director, Institute for Infrastructure and Information Assurance) presented "Critical Infrastructure Protection Priorities for Electromagnetic Pulse" at the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio on Aug. 25. 08
