The James Madison Center was founded in 1999 to honor the legacy of the nation's fourth President and Father of the United States Constitution. Located on the campus of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, the Center serves as a repository for information on Madison's life and times (1751-1836) as well as that of the Federalist Era. The Donald Robertson Project, named for Madison's early tutor, celebrates the vital role of educators in American society. Through a close working relationship between the University and K-12 education, the Center annually offers seminars, workshops, internships and other professional opportunities for students, teachers, and members of the community.  The Center also offers a scholarship in honor of Donald Robertson to an outstanding pre-service elementary school teacher.

The James Madison Center hosts the annual Teacher of Promise Institute in conjunction with the Virginia Milken Educators Network (VMEN) and the JMU College of Education.  The two day in-service brings together outstanding pre-service educators from throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The 1787 Society is also sponsored by the James Madison Center and is designed to provide numerous educational opportunities for students who wish to explore the life, ideals, and philosophy of our fourth president, James Madison. Members serve as an advisory panel for the Center and work on a variety of special events including Constitution Day, Madison Week, the Centennial celebrations, and the Jamestown 2007 commemorations. The society will also act as a liaison between the James Madison Center and the JMU student body.

On March 4, 2009 as part of the bicentennial commemorations of James Madison’s presidency, the Center published Liberty & Learning: The Essential James Madison.  It is available from the JMU University Bookstore, Amazon.com, and Vandamere Press.
