New Solutions to Increasing Individual Physical Activity Levels at School and at Home

Description: Schools across Virginia are currently facing tremendous pressure to provide more effective solutions to the current childhood obesity crisis. We will discuss new and innovative programs designed to increase student physical activity levels at school without major cost increases while offering parents an optional home based program designed to increase the physical activity levels of the entire family.
Emphasis will be placed on leveraging 21st century goals, methods, and the effective use of technology.
Character Development and its Relationship to Physical Activity Begins at an Early Age

Description: Character Development and its relationship to physical activity will be discussed. It will be shown that character development as initiated through play must begin at an early age. However, in order for teachers to initiate activities to promote such pro-social behavior, each teacher must first examine their personal beliefs and values. Various methods will be utilized that should enhance the attendees knowledge of pro-social behaviors that may be instilled into their everyday instruction techniques.
Using Digital Video to Increase Acquisition of Psychomotor Skills

Description: The new millennium students of the 21st century or Millennials as they are called are accustomed to technology, being on the go, multitasking and instant gratification. Students at all levels have different learning styles and comprehend information at varying rates.
If digital video of psychomotor skills were in a downloadable format in which students could view on the go and accessible 24-7 at the leisure of the student, this may increase learning and retention of material.
This presentation will show various psychomotor digital video examples, discuss the process of capturing a psychomotor skill, editing, uploading and downloading digital video to a web page, server or iTunes U. So bring your laptops and IDEAS of psychomotor skills you would like to capture via digital video.
Teaching Games for Understanding: Playing short-sided games with a purpose

Description: Participants will receive an overview of the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGFU) model and sample lesson ideas focusing on invasion and net games. TGFU lessons include small-sided games (at the beginning and end), tactical awareness questions, and skill practice. In TGFU games are divided into four categories: Invasion, Net/Wall, Striking/Fielding, and Target Games.

In this session, we'll talk about how teachers can effectively assess student performance and provide quality feedback in an easy, simple way.
How to make Fitness Portfolios work at the Secondary
Presenter: Ron Trainum, Toano Middle School, and Renee Fiege, Riverbend High School Description: This presentation will outline how to create, implement, and assess fitness portfolios for middle and high school students. We will discuss how to create a format to fit the school needs, how to implement it into the gym and health room, and how to create assessments for students work. At the end of the session will allow time for participants to discuss what they would want to include in their portfolios and how they could start to implement it in their school.
Tips and Strategies for Teaching Self-contained Adapted Physical Education

Description: Many physical education teachers are responsible for teaching self-contained Adapted Physical Education and face a number of challenges in deciding how to best structure their class. This session will address these challenges by sharing two approaches to teaching self-contained Adapted Physical Education classes. Discussion will focus on the benefits of each approach, suggestions for organizing your class, how to determine what to teach, and strategies for incorporating individual IEP goals into your lessons.
