Summary of Actions/Discussions

The James Madison University Board of Visitors met Friday, January 6, 2012, in the Board Room of Madisonís Festival Conference and Student Center.

Following is a summary of actions taken by the board and key areas of discussion at the board meeting:

  • Approved the September 23, 2011 BOV meeting minutes;
  • Approved the November 9, 2011 BOV meeting minutes;
  • Approved the November 28, 2011 BOV meeting minutes;
  • Heard a presentation from W. Heywood Fralin, Chairman of Virginia Business Higher Education Council;
  • Received the Presidentís report presented by Dr. Linwood Rose;
  • Approved committee reports from Audit, Development, Education & Student Life, and Finance & Physical Development.† The Athletics Committee did not meet;
  • The proposed Summer 2012 tuition and fees were presented by Mr. Charles King, Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance.† Summer 2012ís tuition and fees were voted on and approved by the Board of Visitors.

  • Received an update on the Governorís 2012-2014 Biennium Budget from Mr. Charles King, Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance;
  • Approved the 2012 budget amendment presented by Mr. Charles King, Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance;
  • Recognized Dr. Rose as the business leader of the year, presented by the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce;
  • Approved the real estate purchase of 1070 Hillcrest Drive for $350,000.

Was told by President Linwood H. Rose:

  • that the university police department received accreditation;
  • that this is the 40th anniversary of the Marching Royal Dukes;
  • that four institutions - JMU, George Mason, Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia - have begun the 4-VA Collaborative to promote technology in teaching;
  • that the Center for International Stabilization and Recovery was recognized by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton;
  • that the university received a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to enhance digital forensics;
  • that the university was recognized as number 1 in the country for masters-level institutions for short-term study abroad and number 2 in the country overall;
  • that Mr. Jonathan Alger was selected as JMUís sixth president;
  • that Art and Art History have moved to Montpelier Hall during the renovation and expansion of Duke Hall;
  • that the accounting masters program was rated first in the nation in CPA first-time pass rate by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy;
  • that 621 undergraduate students and 152 graduate students received degrees during the December commencement program;
  • that JMU womenís cross country team were the 2011 CAA champions;
  • that JMU menís soccer team were the 2011 CAA champions and advanced to the NCAA;
  • that JMU football team advanced to 2011 FCS 2nd round;
  • that the Art Auction will take place in the spring of 2012.
