Campus Gates Activated, Crosswalk Changes In Effect, Shuttle Schedules

From: Public Affairs

A number of changes to how people get around the JMU campus will be in effect as the new school year begins Monday.

All four gate locations included in the new campus gate system will be in full operation beginning at 7 a.m. Monday. Traffic will be restricted through the Bluestone section of campus from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays.

Vehicles with special permission, such as city buses, emergency vehicles, JMU service vehicles and vehicles of drivers who have received access to handicapped parking, will be able to travel through the gated portion of campus when the gates are in operation.

In addition to the traffic pattern changes, the crosswalk pattern at two intersections near campus have changed. Pedestrians crossing at the intersections of South Main Street and Bluestone Drive/Warsaw Avenue and at South Mason Street and Cantrell Avenue will no longer be able to cross diagonally and should be aware that vehicles will have green lights while pedestrians are crossing. Pedestrians should wait for the walk symbol before crossing and should stay within the crosswalk. Pedestrians wanting to cross South Main Street are encouraged to use the tunnel connecting the Quad and the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts.

A third inner-campus shuttle has been added to the JMU campus as well as a new inner-campus shuttle stop at Chandler Hall. The inner-campus shuttles and the Convo Express run continuous loops on campus, from about 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and arrive at stops approximately every 10 minutes. Bus schedules can be found at the Navigate JMU website.

Buses heading east (toward the Festival) will be labeled purple while those traveling west (toward Memorial Hall) will be labeled gold. The Convo Express runs a similar route to the inner-campus shuttles after leaving the Convo and also will be labeled purple when going east and gold when traveling west. Rather than going to Memorial Hall, the Convo Express goes to the Warsaw Parking Deck (westbound) before looping back to the Convo (eastbound).

A Web application to find bus routes and schedules for the JMU campus, as well as the rest of the Harrisonburg transit system, has been developed by the JMU IT department and is available at Navigate JMU.
