Creating Virtual Worlds in Art, Science and Entertainment
September 20-November 1
- Through the scientific understanding of perception, artists, scientists, and entertainers have manipulated images and ways of seeing to create illusions of depth and motion. This exhibition offers a historical overview into the techniques used throughout the modern period to create virtual worlds and then apply them in art, science, and entertainment.

- In this exhibition, visitors will see projects created by students in this semester's IVS Studio Seminar Problem Solving in Virtual Worlds.

September 28- Kate Stevens (Madison Art Collection)
- The 21st Century Museum: How Technology is changing the Museum World
- With the rapid increase in new technologies available museums are adapting to a new public. Dr. Kate Stevens will discuss how educational applications, smart tag information labels, and virtual museums are transforming the museum experience for both visitor and curator.
October 19- Daniel Robinson (Institute for Visuual Studies)
- The World In Stereo
- Since the mid 19th century, the technique of stereoscopy, a form of 3D imaging, has taken many forms that have enjoyed shifting levels of popularity. In this talk, Robinson will examine some of the most successful, popular, and bizarre incarnations of stereoscopy from the nineteenth-century to the present. Several of the works discussed are on view in the current exhibition at IVS.
November 9- Nicholas de Warren (Wellesley College, Philosophy)
- The Lives of Others: The Imaginary Self and Virtual Reality
- Drawing on philosophical theories of the imaginary and comparisons with the reading of literature, Prof. Nicolas de Warren will discuss different ways in which the self "fictionalizes" itself--imagines itself as the life of another--in the medium of virtual reality and computer games. Is there a specific experience of the imaginary in computer generated virtual environments?
