The New Jersey Institute of Technology announces its Research Experience for Undergraduates in Nanoscale Materials Science and Engineering, held at the New Jersey Center for Engineered Particulates at NJIT.  The program exposes undergraduates to topics associated with nanoscale materials science and engineering as well as to professional development, particularly focused on the research enterprise. A generous stipend is paid for the 10-week program. Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society will be awarding competitive scholarships for first year graduate and professional study in 2007-08.  For information and application materials, see http://www.phikappaphi.org/Web/Scholarships/graduatefellowship.html.  Send applications to Dr. Roger Soenksen's campus mailbox (MSC 2104) no later than February 2, 2007 for consideration.  A committee of Phi Kappa Phi JMU faculty will evaluate the applications and select one applicant as the chapter's nominee for the national competition.  In the recent past, JMU's nominees have had considerable success in receiving either a Fellowship or an Award of Excellence.  This is an excellent opportunity for students to receive financial support for their post-baccalaureate study.

The Leaders on Leadership '07 academic seminar,sponsored by The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, will be held May 12-19.  The focus will be on "Critical Issues in the Age of Globalization."  Early application deadline is Feb. 1 and regular application deadline is April 1.  For information and an application form, see http://www.twc.edu/students/seminars.

The Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN)announces its 19th annual Women and Congress Seminar, tailored towards students interested in the role of women in the lawmaking process.  SESSION 1: March 5-9, 2007  & SESSION 2: March 12-16, 2007.  Registration deadline: February 16, 2007.  Students supplement their seminar experience with field visits, observations on the Hill and discussions on policy issues with women leaders.  The seminar meets in downtown Washington, D.C.locations accessible by Metro.  For information or to print a registration form, contact the PLEN office at 202-872-1585 or plen@plen.org  or see http://www.plen.org/programs/congress.html .

Freshman Class

Both the Brown Bag Lectures and Honors Symposium Series begin in one more week - January 2450 HOPs are required by the end of the school year for first-year Honors Scholars.  Many of you have already completed these or are very close to completing them now.  Some of you have not begun attending HOP events yet this year, so it is time for you to check our Blackboard site to find all the listings.  Over 100 events were posted for fall and a similar number is expected for spring.  You should have no problem finding events that you are interested in attending and that meet the needs of your schedule.                 *****SIGN-UPS ARE NO LONGER REQUIRED******
