Allergy Clinic Steps and Patient Policy
Steps to receive allergy injections at UHC
- Before coming to school be sure you have the following from your allergist:
- Current vials (check the expiration dates).
- Injection schedule indicating the amount, frequency, and date of last injection.
- Instructions for reactions.
- Instructions for missed or late injections
- Instructions for ordering new vials
- Phone and fax numbers for your allergist.
- All new allergy students will require an allergy consult appointment at the Allergy Clinic before you receive your first injection. This appointment will take approximately 20 minutes with the nurse who will prepare your allergy chart, review your allergy information, have you sign a release of medical information form and complete your history form.
- Once you have arrived at school, call the Allergy Clinic at 540.568.2978 to schedule your allergy consult appointment. Allergy injections will not be provided at this time. Don't forget to bring all your vials, schedules, and instructions with you. You may either have your allergist mail your vials and instructions to the Health Center, MSC 7901, 25 East Grace St., Harrisonburg, VA 22807; or you may bring them when you arrive for your initial allergy consult appointment. If you have had them sent by your allergist, you may want to call ahead to see if they have arrived.
- A 30 minute mandatory waiting period is required after you have received your injections.
If you are off your injection schedule, a call to your allergist may be necessary. This could extend your wait time further. If at all possible, except when you are feeling ill, please make every attempt to come for your regularly scheduled injections for the best possible results of your treatment.
- Allergy injections are available Monday through Friday 8-11a.m. and 1-4p.m.
- Read the JMU Health Center Allergy Injection Patient Policy for pertinent information.
- There are fees for service to receive allergy injections. The University Health Center does NOT bill insurances for allergy injections.

Allergy Injection Patient Policy
- All students receiving allergy injections are required to make an initial consult appointment with a nurse before injections are given. Please call 540.568.2978 for an appointment.
- If you are just starting allergy injections, you should receive the first one from your allergist.
- You are responsible for having current instructions, schedules, and allergens at the Health Center. You are also responsible for adhering to your schedule (being off-schedule can increase your time spent in the allergy clinic).
- You will be notified when the allergen is low. The Health Center can reorder serum; however you will be responsible for any mailing cost and any referral requirements for insurance.
- You will be responsible for keeping the Allergy Clinic staff abreast of any changes in address, phone number, health conditions or allergy information.
- Vials left unused at the Health Center will be discarded after the expiration date.
- For your safety, allergy injections are not given without a clinician's presence in the Health Center.
- Allergy injection clinic hours are available by appointment Monday through Friday 8-11a.m. and 1-4p.m. There are no walk-in allergy appointments.
- No matter what your previous experience with allergy injections has been, a 30-minute wait the Health Center is mandatory due to the possibility of a serious reaction. You must have injection sites checked by a nurse before you leave. We cannot continue giving injections to students who refuse to wait or be checked. There are no exceptions.
- Notify the nurse during your waiting period if you experience any of the following symptoms: swelling or itching at injection site, wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, hives, facial swelling, "pins and needles" sensations of skin, flushing, runny nose, nasal congestion, or sneezing.
- Delayed reations are possible. If you have any of the above symptoms after you have received allergy injections and left the Health Center, take an antihistamine (Allegra, Zyrtec, Claritin or Benadryl). If symptoms continue or worsen, return to the Health Center or go to the Emergency Department at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Report this to the nurse BEFORE receiving any additional injections.
- You should wait 48 hours before and after allergy injections to receive any other type of immunizations such as Flu vaccine.
- Avoid vigorous exercise (jogging, gym workouts, etc.) at least one hour, preferably two, before and after injections.
- Please refer to the fees schedule for allergy injection fees. Fees may be paid by cash, check, Flex, Visa or Master Card. The Health Center does NOT bill insurance. A receipt will be given at each visit for insurance reimbursement.
