Theta Chi 12 Days Underway
Brothers of Theta Chi Fraternity have been staying in a trailer on the commons to raise money for their for philanthropy project, 12 Days. There is always at least one brother at the trailer at all times including overnight asking people for donations or toys to help support their cause. The money raised will be used to buy toys for children at The Mercy House, as well as, helping Habitat for Humanity. There is a contest between sororities to see who can raise the most money and the winning sorority will have money donated to their philanthropy project.

JMU Delta Chi to host PowederPuff Tournament
This coming Sunday November 8th, Delta Chi is holding their 3rd annual Powderpuff Tournament to benefit the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. With last year's event total surpassing $1,000, Delta Chi is aiming for $1,500 in donations this year. Thank you to all sororities who have already signed up and a special thanks to ATO, Alpha Phi, and Theta Chi for co-sponsoring the event.
Interfraternity Council Elections this Tuesday
Elections for the Interfraternity Council will take place this upcoming Tuesday evening at the IFC Delegate Meeting. If interested in running, please fill out the following application and return to Taylor 205B by Friday at Noon.
Explore the Traditions of a Greek Step Show
While many African and Latino movements and communication patterns are evident in stepping, the tradition was forged on college campuses in African American and Latino fraternities and sororities out of the minority heritage of speech, song, and dance.

Trick or Treat
Come join members of the JMU Fraternity and Sorority Community on Friday, October 30 from 4-7 pm for their annual Trick-or-Treating on Greek Row. Children are encouraged to come in costume to participate in Halloween activities including trick-or-treating , a hula hoop contest, scavenger hunt, pumpkin painting, haunted house, coloring stations, ring games, and a costume contest to be held at 6pm with prizes!

Make A Wish Week
The Iota Delta chapter of Sigma Nu and the Gamma Tau chapter of Delta Delta Delta had a very successful first annual Wish Week, raising nearly $3,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Virginia in one week alone.

Pi Kappa Phi holds 24-hour Bikeathon
Fraternities at James Madison University have been hard at work promoting their respective philanthropies and organizing related events on campus this semester. With Sigma Chi's Derby Days and Alpha Tau Omega's Rock-4-Rak underway, the brothers of Pi Kappa Phi recently raised over $2,000 in honor of recently deceased brother Chris Gascoigne and the organization's national philanthropy, PUSH America.

SigEp Awards Scholarships to Freshmen
In early September, the Brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity awarded scholarships at their second annual Balanced Man Scholarship Banquet to five stellar freshmen. The finalists exemplified achievement as Gentlemen, Scholars, Leaders, and Athletes. Fraternity members, finalists, as well as family and friends attended the banquet. Along with awarding scholarships to freshmen, a member of the fraternity was also awarded a scholarship for his commitment to living the Balanced Man Ritual on a daily basis. The number of applicants doubled from the first summer of running the scholarship process which is only promising for the future. With the support from both the chapter and alumni, SigEp is working to get their scholarship endowed in an effort to continue to give back to the JMU community.
Dove "Real Woman" to speak at JMU
On Monday, October 5th, the Panhellenic Council at James Madison University is sponsoring Stacy Nadeau, a Dove "Real Woman" spokeswoman and model, who will be speaking on topics relevant to women today, including the widening of our stereotypical view of beauty and her role in this process. Here at JMU, Panhellenic has recently instituted its Be Beautiful Campaign, which promotes inner beauty among women and aims to create awareness of negative stereotypes and hypocrisies.

Delta Chi at JMU wins organization's President's Cup
Four members of James Madison University's Delta Chi chapter, along with two advisors, traveled to Las Vegas this summer for the organization's annual Delta Chi Convention. While the chapter is no stranger to being recognized for their achievements at the event, this year saw the JMU chapter walking away with the top honor in Delta Chi.

In addition to general programming awards recognizing areas such as outstanding alumni advisors, outstanding recruitment, and outstanding intramurals, the chapter also received its first President's Cup Trophy. The distinction recognizes the excellence of the JMU chapter as one of the top three Delta Chi chapters in the nation.

With this past spring's GPA being the highest semester GPA in recent years and an array of awards coming back from Las Vegas, the Five-Star Chapter Delta Chi at JMU is poised for yet another great year.
National Hazing Prevention Week
September 21st through 26th marks the annual National Hazing Prevention Week. Throughout the course of the week, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life as well as JMU Athletics and the Office of Substance Abuse Prevention will be highlighting the national epidemic of hazing on college campuses. Students will have the opportunity to learn what defines hazing, how to prevent hazing and steps to take when one is hazed or witnesses hazing.

Paul's Walk is a Success
Each year the men of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and the women of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority host a series of events in honor of Paul Massey who passed away from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig's disease, on Sept.19, 2005. These events are aimed and educating the campus and local community on this desiese and raising funds to support research for a cure.

FSL Kicksoff a New Year!
On January 10th and 11th Chapter Presidents along with the Executive Councils of the Panhellenic Association and Interfraternity Council met at Camp Horizons to prepare for the 2009. During this overnight leadership retreat these community leaders had the opportunity to identify and discuss current issues and concerns facing Fraternity & Sorority Life at JMU. Following a series of round table discussions and a presentation from Brad Barnett, Sr. Associate Director of Financial Aid, on personal values and finance, participants were challenged to develop personal action plans for addressing these issues.

During the first week of winter break the gentlemen of Sigma Phi Epsilon dedicated their time volunteering with Aid For America. Which consisted of helping rebuild the proud city of Welch, West Virginia. Welch, West Virginia is located in McDowell County. McDowell County is one of the poorest counties in the United States.

Camping Out For A Cause
From November 10th through November 21st, Theta Chi Fraternity sponsored their 9th Annual Twelve Days Project. In order to fulfill their chapter motto of 'The Helping Hand,' the Brothers of Theta Chi spent 12 consecutive days and nights on the University Commons at JMU raising funds for local charities. The purpose of this charity event is to collect toys, and monetary donations to support the underprivileged youth of the greater Rockingham County during the Holiday Season.

President Election 2008
As this yearís election comes to a close, we are again reminded how motivated and involved our Greek community is. This interest was especially evident last week when Senator Barack Obama came to our own campus. The energy that this visit created was felt by nearly everyone regardless of their preferred candidate or party affiliation. Seth Formal of Tau Kappa Epsilon articulated many students' point of view when he explained that he, "made the effort to attend the rally not because [he is] a big Obama supporter, but because it is a big event in JMU history."

ATO at JMU earns recognition as one of the top chapters in the nation.
The Kappa Zeta-VA Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega won the prestigious True Merit award this summer at the annual congress held in Louisville, Kentucky. The True Merit Award is awarded to chapters who achieve a level of operation that is worthy of the recognition. Along with winning the True Merit Award, Kappa Zeta earned excellence awards in New Member Education, Ritual, Financial Management and Campus Involvement/ Leadership Development.
