A family doctor, or primary care physician, is your own personal doctor. He or she works closely with you to make sure you and family receive the health care you need. You see your family doctor for:

* Annual check-ups

* Arranging for lab tests

How Can I find a Family Doctor?

• Contact Health Source for help in finding the best doctor for you and your family. Health Source can put you in touch with doctors throughout the community and help find a translator through Blue Ridge AHEC.

• Ask family or friends whom they would recommend.
  
  
• Look in the Yellow Pages in the phone book under "Physicians/Family Practice" or "Physicians/General Practice."
  
  
• Contact the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Clinic at 540-433-5431 for a referral.
  
  
• Make an appointment at a Health Care Center.

When should I see my family doctor?

Choose your family doctor when you are healthy. Don't wait until you are sick. Make your first visit a check-up, or annual physical exam, so your doctor gets to know you and your health history. You should also see your family doctor when you are not feeling well, such as a cold or stomach ache that doesn't go away.

Here are a few things to remember each time you visit your doctor:

• Bring along a family member or friend for support.
  
  
• Be prepared to describe your symptoms and answer questions about your health history or lifestyle.
  
  
• Come with a list of questions to ask your doctor. Ask your doctor to explain in a way you can understand.
  
  
• Complete the treatment your doctor suggests. If it doesn't work, let your doctor know as soon as possible.
