There are many fun
things to do in Harrisonburg and you can find many of them at the Cecil
F. Gilkerson Community Activities Center. It is the only recreation center
in the city of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. At the center you can
do everything from dancing to playing football.
Where is the center located?
The center is in Westover
Park on Dogwood Drive in Harrisonburg.
When is the center open?
- Monday through
Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Saturday, the center
is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Sunday, it is open
from 1 to 8 p.m.
- Every Tuesday and
Thursday from 6:30 to 9 a. m., the center lets you come in extra early
to use the gym and exercise room before everyone else arrives.
- Every Friday night
from 9 p.m. to midnight, you can come in and play midnight basketball
with your friends.
What can I do there?
Join the fun. All you
need to do is go there, get an ID card and get registered for the activities
that you want to do. The ID card costs $15.00 for people who live in Harrisonburg,
and $30.00 for people who do not.
- The center has
a large gym, three racquetball courts, an exercise/weight room, three
game rooms with billiards and table tennis, a pottery room, a ceramic
room, a photography lab, a craft room, a dance studio, and three large

get more involved, you can sign up to join one of the sports teams at
the center. They have a girl's junior basketball team, a boy's junior
basketball team and a men's basketball team.
- You can join the
boy's football team, the tennis team, the volleyball team or the indoor
or outdoor soccer team.
- The center also
has lots of learning activities. You can learn how to play basketball,
ski or snowboard.
- You can practice
how to do gymnastics, ballet, tap or jazz dancing.
- At the center they
can also teach you sign language, how to play cards, or you can take
a class in how to take great pictures with your camera.
