Cecil F. Wilkerson Community Activities Center - So much to do so little time . . .

There are many fun things to do in Harrisonburg and you can find many of them at the Cecil F. Gilkerson Community Activities Center. It is the only recreation center in the city of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. At the center you can do everything from dancing to playing football.

Where is the center located?

The center is in Westover Park on Dogwood Drive in Harrisonburg.

When is the center open?

  • Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

  • Saturday, the center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Sunday, it is open from 1 to 8 p.m.

  • Every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 to 9 a. m., the center lets you come in extra early to use the gym and exercise room before everyone else arrives.

  • Every Friday night from 9 p.m. to midnight, you can come in and play midnight basketball with your friends.

What can I do there?

  • The center has a large gym, three racquetball courts, an exercise/weight room, three game rooms with billiards and table tennis, a pottery room, a ceramic room, a photography lab, a craft room, a dance studio, and three large classrooms.

  • If you want to get more involved, you can sign up to join one of the sports teams at the center. They have a girl's junior basketball team, a boy's junior basketball team and a men's basketball team.

  • You can join the boy's football team, the tennis team, the volleyball team or the indoor or outdoor soccer team.

  • The center also has lots of learning activities. You can learn how to play basketball, ski or snowboard.

  • You can practice how to do gymnastics, ballet, tap or jazz dancing.

  • At the center they can also teach you sign language, how to play cards, or you can take a class in how to take great pictures with your camera.
Join the fun. All you need to do is go there, get an ID card and get registered for the activities that you want to do. The ID card costs $15.00 for people who live in Harrisonburg, and $30.00 for people who do not.

If you want to see what new activities they have at the center or if you have any questions, you can go on their website at www.ci.harrisonburg.va.us, then click on "Departments," then "Parks and Recreation," or call them at 540-433-9168.
