In 2008, Rep. Goodlatte introduced a resolution to the U.S. House of Representatives honoring JMU on the 100th anniversary of its founding. The resolution passed the House by a unanimous vote.

In 2010, JMU received the Governor's Environmental Excellence Award gold medal for the work of the Institute for the Stewardship of the Natural World. Also in 2010, the university received a Governor's Technology Award Honorable Mention in Innovation in K-12 Education for The Geospatial Semester, a partnership with high schools throughout the state that teaches students how to apply cutting-edge geospatial technology to locally-based problems.
