THE EARLY
CHILDHOOD SPECIAL EDUCATION ACADEMY will provide information to individuals who provide services
to preschoolers (ages 2-5) with disabilities.
TEACHER STRAND

The Teacher
Strand, the week will focus on
Virginia's Foundation Blocks for Early Learning with an emphasis on
content instruction for science, history and social science, and
physical and motor development. Instruction will be provided by
professionals with expertise in each of the content areas. Friday
will allow participants the opportunity to work together as teams
to 1) develop implementation and data gathering/assessment plans to
use in their own preschool classrooms, 2) identify and explore
resources and materials available to support their content
instruction, and 3) create a support network among themselves for
future professional development.
The Teacher
Stand Academy is limited to 35 participants. CLOSED
The
Paraprofessional Strand of this
academy will provide participants with an overview of disabilities,
instruction in communication and language development,
personal-social development and positive behavior supports, oral
motor-feeding development, positioning and handling, and an
overview of special education law and regulations.
The
Paraprofessional Strand is limited to 35

Dr. Cheryl Beverly is
Coordinator for the Early Childhood Education Program at James
Madison University. She teaches K-12 and Early Childhood
Special Education in undergraduate and graduate level courses at
JMU incorporating a family centered, integrated philosophy to
providing services to children with disabilities. Dr. Beverly also
works with interdisciplinary partnerships across campus and in
professional service communities to enhance the level of teacher
preparation and services available to children with diverse
abilities and experience. Dr. Beverly earned a Bachelor's degree in
Special Education SLD from the University of South Florida in 1978.
In 1994 she graduated from the University of Florida with a
doctorate in Early Childhood Special Education.

Cheryl Henderson
Cheryl Henderson is the
co-director of the VA Department of Education Region 5 Training
& Technical Assistance Center at James Madison University. She
has degrees in elementary education, special education K-12, and
early childhood special education, with 14 years public school
teaching experience. She is also an adjunct instructor in the
Exceptional Education Department at JMU.
