2008 ACADEMIES

The 2008 Content Teaching Academy is scheduled for the week of June 23-27, 2008, on the campus of James Madison University, in Harrisonburg, Virginia. All educators are invited to apply for enrollment!

Sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education and the JMU College of Education's Center for School Leadership, the Content Teaching Academy offers teachers and school administrators practical methods -- grounded in sound educational research -- for enhancing their teaching. The Academies are organized according to grade levels and either have a specific content area or pedagogical emphasis. The 2008 Academy options are listed to the right.

"You really can't think about how to teach unless you're also thinking about what you're teaching," says Dr. Laurie O. Cavey, director of the academy, who is an assistant professor of mathematics education at JMU. "Even teachers who have been out there for 20-plus years still have things they can learn."

There are several new Academy options this year, including Creative Movement and ASOL Special Education. The focus of the Creative Movement Academy is on the positive aspects of physical movement for learning. Participants will be able to tailor the activities in this academy to various content areas. The ASOL Special Education Academy focus is on adapting content-specific instruction to the needs of children with significant cognitive disabilities.

Two science Academies are available this year, Geography and Environment and Physics/Physical Science. The focus of the Geography and Environment science academy is on creating meaningful watershed experiences for students, and is open to science, social studies and agricultural teachers. The Physics/Physical Science Academy focus in on teaching the key concepts in the physical sciences and is appropriate for both physical science and physics teachers.

Participants of the 6-12 academies will receive professional development in the Strategic Instruction Model, a research-validated instructional model, developed by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. The Survey and Recall Enhancement Routines will be offered in these academies.

School and central office administrators who do not attend an entire academy may join their colleagues on Thursday and Friday. This strand will begin with a morning session specifically designed for administrators.
