The 14th Annual Content Teaching Academy will be held June 24 - June 28, 2013 on the campus of James Madison University, located in the beautiful and historic Shenandoah Valley. The programs (Academies) offer high quality professional development that include in-depth studies in a range of content areas. In addition, each Academy is designed to engage participants in critical dialogues of practice with instructional sessions conducted by scholars and master teachers who understand the challenges associated with today's classroom.
OPTIONS FOR ATTENDANCE AND EARNING CREDIT:
Attendance Only- Professional Development Points
The CTA will award a certificate documenting 30 hours of attendance and participation at the Content Teaching Academy. Most school districts will translate this as 30 professional development points. Perfect attendance during the week of the Academy is required. No follow up work is required for this option.
Highly Qualified Institute Credit (for special education teachers)
The CTA will award a certificate documenting 30 hours of professional development activity to participants who have perfect attendance and participation during the week of the Academy. In addition, follow up assignments must be successfully completed. These requirements meet the HOUSSE requirements for an institute and may be used towards obtaining highly qualified status in a content area.
Graduate Credit
Participants will earn 3 hours of university graduate credit (90 professional development points) upon successful completion of an academy. This option requires attendance at two additional night sessions plus the successful completion of follow up assignments. This grade will appear on your official JMU transcript. Transcripts can be requested free of charge from the JMU Registrars site at: http://www.jmu.edu/registrar/.
Additional Information for Participants
Participants interested in obtaining highly qualified status should discuss this option with the appropriate personnel in their division. Click here for more information on requirements to meet the Highly Qualified designation.
The Virginia Licensure Renewal Manual provides guidance for all license holders and may be accessed on the VDOE website or by clicking here. Sections 1. College Credit and Section 8. Professional Development Activity are particularly pertinent to participants of the CTA.
