JMU Student Accepts Award for "Scottish Young Software Engineer of the Year"

JMU digital forensics masters' student Thomas Grimes received the award of a lifetime on September 29. Grimes, hailing from Liverpool, England, received third prize as "Scottish Young Software Engineer of the Year."

Grimes is currently working towards his master's degree in computer science with a concentration in digital forensics. Digital forensics is a new concentration offered by JMU this year.

Grimes designed a screen replication program for Mac, PC and Linux. The program allows educators to see what is on students' lab computers during a class meeting. When using this tool, teachers may also pull up documents and presentations for all students to see directly in front of their eyes.

Comedian Kevin Bridges presented Grimes' trophy and a check for £1500 (U.S. equivalent: $2340.10). The prize was courtesy of Sopra Group UK, a European information technology (IT) consulting and services company.

Grimes expressed his fondness for his studies at JMU, "I really like America. It's a good feel to study over here," Grimes emphasized. "[Harrisonburg] is not a big crazy city like New York."

"I like the attention I get because of my accent!" Grimes then explained, "There aren't many British people [at JMU] at all."
