Career Guide to JMU Majors

The Career Guide to JMU Majors provides a sampling of career options for each of the majors offered at JMU. The Career Guide also provides major specific information on internship opportunities, characteristics of successful students, and websites for further exploration of potential careers.

FOCUS: the Online Career Planning Program

FOCUS provides a self-paced, online format for exploring careers that could be compatible for you. You can save your information and come back as often as you like. We recommend you schedule an appointment with an academic or career advisor to help make meaning of your results.


Vault is a great resource for exploring career fields and job titles that interest you. You can research industries to learn more about a field, or view profiles of different professions to learn what a typical day would be like in the life of a job you're considering. 

Resource Center

Come to the CAP Resource Center to explore majors and careers as well as resources for conducting an internship, job, or graduate school search. Career educators, who are trained peer assistants, are available to assist you. You can also schedule a time to tour the Resource Center or browse our complete collection of books available in the Resource Center.

Occupational Outlook Handbook
Search for descriptions of careers to identify necessary training and education, earnings, job prospects, work tasks, and work conditions.

Job and Internship Postings
Research actual job and internship titles and descriptions by searching current postings.

Ask an Expert

Ask an expert about their experience in the field.  An informational interview can be a great way of learning about a career. Learn more about what questions to ask and how to find a professional to meet with.

Try it Out

Not sure about a career you're considering? Try it out through job shadowing, internships, externships, or volunteering. Gaining hands-on experience can be helpful whether you are uncertain about a career field, or just want more experience before applying for jobs.
