The Office of Sexual Assault Prevention is committed to enhancing the development of students by supporting, educating, and collaborating with them as they learn to make healthy choices.
|
As part of the University Health Center, we accomplish this by a commitment to raise the awareness of JMU students about the risk and prevention of sexual assault. We offer counseling services and clinical referrals, educational materials and programming.
We also provide an environment that is safe, confidential, empathic, and welcomes diversity.
We are located in the Warren Campus Center, Room 404, which is close to The Commons and Gibbons Dining Hall (D-Hall).
History
Originally titled The Office of Sexual Assault Education, our office was opened in December 1994 at the request of the student body. What we do relating to sexual assault prevention is:
Aggressively emphasize prevention and risk reduction throughout the campus community.
Raise campus awareness of sexual assault and sexual harassment issues.
Work with campus police and local law enforcement agencies (i.e., Silent Witness Program and Rape Aggression Defense System 'RADS').
Provide prompt, confidential, and compassionate services to victims of sexual assault, dating violence, or sexual harassment.
We have a broad range of departmental literature and resources for students and other universities interested in opening a similar office on their campuses.
We offer a variety of programs to all campus classes and groups.
We are proud to have developed and implemented an Offender Education/Counseling Program, which offers yet another sanction option to the judicial and/or criminal system.
We offer weekly support groups for male and female survivors of sexual assault, and for friends of survivors, in a confidential and trusting environment.
