Do You Feel Safe?

Fortunately, for most people, we do not need this type of sign at our residence.  But, for those who have been victimized by someone who enjoys "peeping" at unsuspecting victims, the idea is not unrealistic.  We don't hand out signs, but we can offer tips on how to minimize your risk of being stalked or "peeped at."

As taken from the August 27, 2001 issue of the Daily News-Record, it states "Harrisonburg and James Madison University police are warning students that men who spy on women during private and intimate moments are on the prowl.

There are several ways for female college students to protect themselves and insure their privacy.  Begin by getting into the habit of security by doing the following.

  • Keep doors and windows locked at night.
  • Close blinds, especially in the bedroom.  Add curtains for extra security.
Keep Out
  • Communicate with your roommates.  Tell them when you are going out and when you expect to return.  Make someone responsible each night for making sure the door is locked.
  • Get to know your neighbors and watch out for each other.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Don't hesitate to call police to report a suspicious person.
  • And if the worse happens, and you find someone in your bedroom, or outside your window, CALL 911!
