The OSAP offers prompt, confidential and compassionate support services to victims of sexual assault and sexual harassment, as well as to secondary victims (those who have been indirectly affected by the rape or sexual assault of a friend or family member).  Our staff is educated in all aspects of date and acquaintance rape, including date rape drugs, hospital procedures, and legal referrals.  We also offer information and referrals to victims with medical concerns, such as physical injuries, pregnancy, or STDs.

Campus Police employs two investigators with 24 hour coverage for assault and other serious crimes.  They work closely with the OSASAP, Counseling and Student Development Center, and the SANE Nurses at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.   Investigators will assist victims who may need immediate medical attention, and inform students of their options with regards to criminal, judicial, or civil action.   A victim's sense of comfort and control during the reporting and investigation process is of primary concern to the department, which maintains confidentiality at the victim's discretion.

 

CARE (Campus Assault ResponsE)

The CARE Helpline is for people who have been directly or indirectly affected by sexual assault.  Operating on a pager-voicemail system, the Helpline is operational 24 hours, 7 days a week.  The victim receives a call back from a trained volunteer within 15 minutes.

The WRC is dedicated to the education and empowerment of our community by supporting and celebrating the diversity of women.  A student can expect to receive support and direction when seeking help from our office.  All volunteers at the WRC will provide the student with information from the various resources available to sexual assault survivors at JMU.

The C&SDC at JMU provides the confidential individual and group counseling services for University students striving to overcome sexual assault history.  Services are available for survivors, perpetrators, partners of survivors, and concerned family and friends of survivors.

Students may come to the UHC during the hours of Monday-Friday from 8 AM - 5 PMand Saturday from 8 AM 12 Noon.  The student will receive support, guidance, and medical attention in a caring, confidential manner.  Intervention and referral decisions are made together with the student and based on the most eminent need.

When a victim of sexual assault seeks help from the ORL, they can expect personal support, professional discretion, and timely referral to campus and community resources.  Each of the 30 residence halls on campus is staffed with a hall director and several resident advisors.  These staff members are specially trained to provide programs, services, and support for students, including emergency response.  Each hall director and resident assistant has received training in the area of sexual assault awareness.

The OJA offers a caring approach to victims of violence.  They help people throughout the judicial process, ensuring that every victim is aware of their options and all judicial procedures.  The victim does not need to schedule an appointment in advance.  Immediate accommodations are made for the victim to feel comfortable remaining at JMU until the case is resolved.
