Alternative Text Program

Alternative Book Formats

E-Text

MP3

The Alt-Text department may convert the book into an MP3 audio file.  We organize mp3 files by chapter that will be read aloud by a computer voice. When requesting a book in MP3 format, you must choose the voice and reading speed that best suit you. To sample available voices and speeds click here. If you would like further customize your audio book, please send us an email at alt-text@jmu.edu.

Daisy

Through Learning Ally, the Alt-Text department is often able to obtain books in Daisy format. Daisy books are the most interactive format that we provide. In this format, books are read aloud by human voice, allowing for changes in reading speed, quick page navigation, and provide study features such as page and sentence bookmarking.

To listen to books in Daisy format, you must use an audio player that is capable of reading the format. The Alt-Text department provides equipment loans for Victor Readers: walkman-sized cd players that are built to manipulate all of the functions of Daisy cds.

Unfortunately, not all books are available in Daisy format and the Alt-Text department is limited to providing only the books attainable through Learning Ally. If your requested book is available in this format, you will receive an email from alt-text@jmu.edu informing you of your options.

Kurzweil

Kurzweil is the OCR software that the Alt-Text department uses to edit and convert textbooks to alternate formats. The program features a screen reader with multiple customization options, as well as study help tools that are very useful when working with electronic texts. Books in Kurzweil format may only be opened by a computer with Kurzweil software installed. If you do not have the software on your home computer, the software may be used in the Assistive Technology Labs in both ECL and Carrier Libraries.

Braille

The Alt-Text Program may also produce materials in braille format for any who need it.
