How Can You Remove Learning Barriers for Your Students?

The Alt-Text Program relies on faculty to share the responsibility of ensuring access for all students. Procuring and/or converting printed materials, particularly course textbooks, to alternative formats can take a number of weeks. There are several steps that you can take to facilitate the timely availability of these materials.

Acquaint yourself with the Alt-Text Process to understand student responsibilities.
Submit text book adoption orders to the approved academic unit representatives prior to the following deadlines listed in JMU Policy #2110: Ordering Text books.
When ordering books from publishers, ask if their textbooks are available in alternative formats.
Prepare a course syllabus that includes dates and pages for required readings on or before the first day of class.
Assist the student and Alternative Text Program Staff in locating materials for conversion to alternative formats should the need arise. If you have a desk copy of the course textbook you would be willing to lend for scanning, prior to the beginning of the semester.

Services For Faculty

In addition to textbooks, the Alt-Text staff converts syllabi, class handouts and exams to alternative formats. You may be contacted for copies of these materials or access to your course Blackboard page should the need arise.
