Alternative Text Program

Having Your Book Cut & Scanned

If your book is not available through Learning Ally, AccessText, or already in our archives, the fastest way to get the book into an accessible format is to have the binding removed and the book scanned.

If this is the case, you will receive an email from alt-text@jmu.edu instructing you to bring your book(s) to the ODS office in Wilson Hall room 107 between 8am-12pm, or 1pm-5pm Mon-Fri. Within 2-5 business days, you will receive an email notifying you that your rebound book is ready to pick up.

The picture on the left is a book with the binding removed. The picture on the right will be the condition of book after it is rebound. At the end of the semester, the JMU Bookstore will buy back books that have been cut and rebound. Textbook rentals may also be cut, rebound and returned.

Note: If you choose to wait on the publisher and not cut and scan your textbook there is no guarantee you will get the book in an alternate format. The publishers may take up to 6 weeks to provide it to us, or they may take 6 weeks to tell us they do not have it in an electronic format.

Student Responsibilities

Be proactive and contact your professor before the beginning of the semester to obtain textbook information. The earlier you submit your order request, the quicker your order can be processed before initial readings are due.

Submit your syllabus along with the Alternative Text order. This will ensure you will receive the materials through installments before your assignment due date.

Maintain consistent communication. Responding to Alternative Text e-mails in a timely manner will help us get you your materials faster.

Be responsible for your own book drop off and pick up when required.
