Health and Human Services Task Force
Minutes
February 9, 2000
Vida Huber called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. in Moody Lounge. The members present were Herb Amato, Judy Holt, Jean Dalton, Bill Walker, Craig Abrahamson, Janet Gloeckner, Jeff Kushner, Cory Cleland, Cheryl Beverly, Brenda Ryals, and Lennie Echterling. Student Paula Neher was present as a participant observer.
The minutes of the February 2 meeting were reviewed and approved.
Vida Huber suggested that the Task Force divide into subgroups to begin fleshing out ideas, develop rationales, and design specific recommendations. The four subgroups include:
1. Courses (Janet, Jeff, and Cory)
2. Practicum and Clinical Education (Judy and Herb)
3. "Nitty Gritty" (Jean, Lennie, and Brenda)
4. Outreach Programs (Bill, Craig, and Cheryl)
The Task Force reconvened near the end of the meeting to report on progress in the subgroups. Members summarized the possible recommendations that they had generated.
Courses:
1. Provide many opportunities for students and faculty to participate
in interdisciplinary learning experiences.
2. Develop a fair compensation plan for team teaching with colleagues.
3. Design core courses that share common objectives across disciplines.
4. Offer minors in interdisciplinary health and human services.
5. Consider developing a neuroscience major.
Practicum and Clinical Education:
1. Design and quickly implement shared projects to address health
and human service needs. 2. Offer interdisciplinary practicum experiences.
3. Design and offer interdisciplinary certifications.
4. Offer post-bachelor's degree interdisciplinary training.
5. Design portfolio procedures so students can compile interdisciplinary experiences
and products.
Administrative "Nitty Gritty":
1. Establish a Health and Human Services Advisory Board.
2. Develop a Health and Human Services Interest Web Site.
3. Decrease barriers to interdisciplinary teaching and other activities at JMU.
4. Develop and coordinate an Interdisciplinary Career Fair.
Outreach Programs:
1. Provide more community service programs that take place in
a training environment.
2. Focus on offering services that are more affordable and accessible.
3. Take advantage of the new modular building to coordinate community outreach
programs. 4. Develop satellite community service programs.
Vida invited the groups to write up their recommendations and email them to her for dissemination to the entire task force.
Next Meeting: The next meeting of the Health and Human Services Task Force will be Wednesday, February 16, at 4:00 p.m. in Moody Lounge.
