Furious Flower mourns the passing of Dr. Andrew Lord Superior Marcano, calypsonian and cultural icon from Trinidad and Tobago. He was a man of great talent whose lifelong commitment to the arts was an inspiration to all who knew him. Marcano was born in 1937, and his career as a calypsonian spanned six decades, for which he was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2017 from the University of the West Indies. Held in April of 2018 at his home in Petit Valley, "Lord Superior" Hosts Furious Flower was one of his last major events. The evening of entertainment, education and cultural exchange featured "Supie" and his band; local Trini talent Michael Anthony, Pearl Eintou Springer, Mervyn Taylor, and Dawad Phillips; as well as Furious Flower Director Dr. Joanne Gabbin and Assistant Director Lauren K. Alleyne. Both inspirational and instructive, the experience was an unforgettable one. It was clear that Lord Superior, like Brooks, embodied a spirit of love and care and generosity; of commitment to his craft, to his country, and to his people and indeed he made us feel as though we were "his people." We at Furious Flower are saddened by the loss of his immense talent and beautiful spirit, and we feel honored to have been in his presence. Rest in peace and power, Dr. Andrew "Lord Superior" Marcano, and may you rise in music.
