March 19 Update to Parents and Guardians

News

The following communication was sent to parents and guardians of JMU students on March 19 by JMU's Office of Parent Relations.

Dear JMU Parents and Guardians,

As an essential member of the JMU family, we are here for you always, and especially during these uncertain times. We are all facing challenging times as a result of the COVID-19 virus, and this has required unprecedented changes to our daily lives. Therefore, we appreciate your continued flexibility and partnership as we navigate these changes together.

On Wednesday, your students were sent an important update regarding the spring semester from President Alger. These updates came with guidance from state and federal agencies and attentiveness towards the well-being of the entire JMU community. Although these were very difficult decisions to make, the update included the following factors:

  • Online and remote instruction has been extended through the remainder of spring semester.
  • On-campus residents will need to move out by March 29 or apply to stay.
  • The university will offer refunds for housing and unused dining plans.
  • Spring commencement ceremonies have been postponed.
  • Students are urged not to return to live in off-campus housing at this time.
  • All events on campus are cancelled, regardless of size, through May 15.
  • JMU’s international programs have been suspended through Summer 2020.

The full announcement is available here. Please continue to check the jmu.edu/covid19 website for the most up to date information. The university will continue to update this resource as new information becomes available.

We are grateful to all of you for your continued support, and as a community we will navigate these difficult times together. We will continue to communicate with you as conditions change; however, please do not hesitate to contact our office if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Office of Parent Relations
