Have you ever wondered what the former Harrisonburg High School looks like on the inside now or what the new Veteran's Memorial Stadium will look like next year?
Whether you went to high school in this building, watched a baseball game at the current Veteran's Memorial Stadium or are just a curious member of the community, now is your opportunity!
Greater Madison invites members of the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County community to tour the former Harrisonburg High School (now JMU's Memorial Hall). The event will take place on Wednesday, September 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. Before or after the tour community members can see firsthand what the new Veteran's Memorial Stadium will look like once construction is completed next year. Guests can also experience Science on a Sphere and visit the Mineral Museum. There is no formal program and guests are welcome to come anytime between 6 and 8 p.m.
JMU Mineral Museum
The Department of Geology and Environmental Science will open its collection of over 550 crystals and gemstones from around the world. The minerals are arranged in three displays: Systematic Collection by chemistry and structure, Locality Collections from areas of Virginia and Tennessee, Fluorescent Collection of minerals that glow under ultraviolet light. Science on a Sphere
James Madison is the first university to acquire Science on a Sphere, an 8-foot, sphere-shaped, 3-D data visualization tool that was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Prior to its arrival in Harrisonburg, SOS had primarily been used in museums. SOS uses four projectors to show processed satellite data so the observer has the illusion of seeing Earth from an astronaut's perspective in space. SOS can show "movies" on environmental processes of Earth, such as a depiction of global warming and changes in geography in the past. The sphere is in the old auxiliary gym.
Established in 1971, Greater Madison exists to advance a mutually beneficial relationship between James Madison University and the Harrisonburg/Rockingham County community.
