HARRISONBURG - Thirty-nine James Madison University volunteers will travel to Suffolk Monday, May 5, to help with clean-up efforts necessitated by tornadoes ripping through the city April 28.
The relief work is drawing 37 JMU students, ranging from freshmen to graduate students, and one high-school sophomore. While JMU's College of Education is sponsoring the trip, students represent other colleges as well. Mary L. Slade, a professor in the college's Department of Exceptional Education, is coordinating the weeklong trip.
The JMU group will work with the National Relief Network and United Way to begin recovery work in the area, mostly removing debris, according to Slade. The volunteers will work through May 10.
